A Note on "Diplomacy à la vodka"
This whole story takes place in the mindset of a dreamy, intoxicated fantasy in Interwar Europe. I began writing the original in French, then switched to English, then back to French for specific passages that are best expressed in a dreamy foreign language.
The stream-of-consciousness story about diplomacy lost in translation seems very fitting for a work that alternates between languages it is written in. I am including the original version written in French and English because that best expresses the thoughts and emotions that I wish to express. I do want all interested readers to be able to access my writing, so I provided the version I translated into English throughout.
I wrote this following Brexit and the disunion of the European Union.
The title “Diplomacy à la Vodka” expresses this mixture of drunk confusion of foreign languages with international negotiations - as though diplomacy were a dish that could be served like penne à la vodka.
